CHOP and Penn launch new Kidney Innovation Center The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and Penn Medicine are preparing to launch the Penn-CHOP Kidney Innovation Center. This research center will promote interdisciplinary kidney disease research and bring together both pediatric and adult kidney disease researchers. Scientists in this new center include clinical epidemiologists, biostatisticians, bioinformaticists, computational biologists, geneticists, pathologists, physiologists, biochemists, immunologists, genomicists, pharmacologists, psychologists, and educators all with the goal of “transforming patient care by early detection, prevention and treatment of kidney disease and its complications across the life course.” Learn more here

What it is: Congress recently passed the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. This bill includes several changes to Medicare that will benefit those with kidney disease. Medicare changes that will impact healthcare costs for those with kidney disea
Limits Part D out-of-pocket prescription drug expenses (capped at $2,000/year)
Allows for healthcare costs to be spread out over the year rather than the bulk of expenses occurring in the first month(s) of the year
Allows Medicare to negotiate drug prices for select drugs
Caps insulin copays to $35 per month
Expands Low-Income Subsidies (LIS) which will now cover all or part of monthly premiums for beneficiaries with incomes between 135-150% of the federal poverty level.
Why it matters to you: The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 will benefit Medicare beneficiaries with kidney disease by reducing out-of-pocket expenses for prescription drugs, allowing Medicare to negotiate drug pricing, and capping insulin costs to $35 per month. Uncontrolled diabetes can cause or worsen kidney damage, and making insulin more accessible will help prevent kidney disease as a result of unmanaged diabetes.
